Indians in Kuwait: Kuwait is renowned for its rich history, cultural diversity, and thriving economy. Situated at the head of the Persian Gulf in the northeast corner of the Arabian Peninsula, it is one of the smallest countries in the world in terms of land area. With the world’s sixth-largest oil reserves, Kuwait is also one of the wealthiest countries globally. Additionally, it is a founding member of the GCC and holds membership in the United Nations (UN), the Arab League, OPEC (Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries), and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

Indians in Kuwait:

In 2023, the population of Kuwait was 4.82 million, with 1.53 million Kuwaiti citizens and 3.29 million foreign nationals from over 100 countries. In 2024, the population had increased to 4.93 million, a 1.98% increase from 2023. Over the years, Kuwait has become an attractive destination for expatriates, particularly for many Indians. The Indian community is the largest expatriate group, comprising approximately 21% of the total population, and is not just a statistic but a vibrant part of Kuwait’s social and economic fabric.

Education System in Kuwait:

  • Kuwait’s education system is growing day by day. There are two types of schools in Kuwait: private and public.
  • The public schools generally follow the Arabic curriculum and are gender-segregated.
  • Private schools are divided between Arabic schools, which follow the official curriculum of Kuwait, and foreign language schools, which follow different curriculums, e.g., American, British, French, International Baccalaureate (IB), and Indian CBSE Curriculum.
  • There are 23 Indian schools affiliated with CBSE Delhi in Kuwait.
  • Kuwait’s general education system consists of four levels: Pre-Primary (2 years), Primary (5 years), Intermediate (4 years), and Secondary (3 years). Schooling is mandatory for all students aged 6 to 14.

  • Kuwaiti Arabic is a variant of Arabic which is used in everyday life, while English is widely used as a business language in Kuwait. For Humanities students, French is taught as a third language, but only for two years.
  • Basic education includes Arabic, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Islamic Studies, and Physical Education.
  • Intermediate education focuses more on Mathematics, Sciences, Humanities, and Vocational education.
  • The Ministry of Higher Education oversees post-secondary or higher education in Kuwait, ensuring the quality and standards of technical and vocational courses offered by state institutes and private universities.
  • Kuwait has several private and public universities. Kuwait University is the oldest public university in the country.
  • There are around 194 Indian students in Kuwait who are pursuing higher studies in Sharia and Islamic studies, medicine, business administration, engineering, etc., in different Kuwait universities/ colleges, such as Kuwait University, Arab Open University, and Australian University of Kuwait.

Indians in Kuwait: Career Options | Life Style 

Cultural Diversity:

  • The Indian community has a significant presence in Kuwait. Most Indians originate from states like Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, with the former constituting 66% of the Indian national population.
  • Kuwait has a rich cultural diversity due to the diverse communities in different countries. People from other countries often interact, leading to a rich cultural exchange.

Cost of Living:

  • The Kuwaiti government do not allow foreign nationals to buy houses or other properties. Therefore, people live in a rental apartment. Living in Kuwait is quite expensive compared to other Gulf countries.
  • Regarding transport, most people, especially women, have their car. However, to get a driving license, the minimum required salary is KD 600.
  • There are so many upscale shopping malls, amusement parks and other places to enjoy and spend time with family and friends.

Career Opportunities:

  • Indians play an important role in Kuwait’s workforce and economy. Many Indian professionals work across different sectors in different positions, such as engineers, doctors, chartered accountants, software experts, technicians, nurses, etc.
  • Kuwait’s thriving economy provides ample career opportunities. Graduates can find internships and employment opportunities in industries such as engineering, finance, healthcare, and oil and gas.
  • If somebody is looking for a job in Kuwait, then they require a work permit, a no objection certificate, a passport, and other documents.
