Dreaming of a medical career is often a journey filled with passion, dedication, and a desire to make a difference in the world. For many aspiring doctors, India stands as a beacon of exceptional medical education, drawing students from around the globe to its esteemed institutions. If you’re an NRI/OCI/POI student with the same dream, navigating the admission process in India is a daunting task. But fret not, for this blog is tailored to help you understand the steps in pursuing your medical aspirations in India.
Students, whether they are Indians or NRI/OCI/POI, must qualify for the NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) to get admission to medical courses in India. NEET-UG is the only pre-medical entrance exam that allows students to be admitted to top medical colleges.
Different quotas in NEET allow students to achieve their dream careers. Admission for medical courses for NRI is done through the NRI quota in NEET. Apart from the 15% ALL India Quota (AIQ) and 85% State Quota, universities in India offer admission to NRI students under the 15% NRI quota in the NEET reserved by the Medical Council of India. Both Persons of Indian Origin (POI) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) are included in the NRI Quota. They must clear the NEET exam to get admission to their dream medical college.
The NRI (Non-Resident Indian) quota is a reservation system or allocation of seats in medical educational institutions that is specifically for students who hold NRI/OCI/PIO status. The seats are reserved for Indians living abroad but of Indian origin. Such students may have families living abroad for work, business, or other reasons.
A candidate is eligible for the NRI quota in NEET if they meet the following criteria:

Can an NRI apply for general category. What will the entrance exam fees for an NRI applying g for general category
No, an NRI can only be applied under the NRI Category, not the General Category. General Category, EWS, OBC, SC, and ST are confined to Indian Nationals appearing for NEET based on constitutional rights. Reservations are not applicable to NRI Candidates. So, if you are an NRI, you should select NRI as your category.

To get a seat in a Government College, you must score more than 550 marks in the NEET Exam. Well, there is a little bit of difference between the Government Medical College seats in all India quota and state quota seats for MBBS, BDS, etc. It varies from one state to another.
Can I apply for 2 seat in NRI quota?
Greetings from ALLEN Overseas!
A student can only apply or single seat in the medical college under AIQ or State Quota Counselling.
Thank You!

Hello, I am an Indian national and living in India. My daughter holds USA passport and studying in India since standard 1. She has OCI card and aadhar card. Can she take admission in regular quota or she will have to take in NRI quota only? And what is the cut off marks in NEET for US nationals? Thank you in advance.
Greetings from ALLEN Overseas!
If your daughter has been studying in India since Standard 1 and has acquired Indian citizenship, she needs to apply using an Aadhar card.
She can utilize NRI sponsorship only when you or her relative works or resides in the USA. However, utilizing NRI sponsorship will be subject to the rules and regulations finalized by the MCC and other conducting bodies. US Nationals need to qualify for the NEET cutoff marks to be eligible for NRI quota admissions. The institute-wise cutoff varies every year.
We hope this will help you!

Is children of people working in merchant navy eligibile for nri quota.
In last 5 years, parents of childs are staying onboard the ship for more than 182 days every year.
Merchant navy people are exempted to pay tax in india as they are considered nri if stay more than 6 months on ships.
So are they eligibile for nri quota for admission in medical.

My daughter is in grade 10 in uae. Can she be considered as Indian general category in she is doing her 11 and 12 from India. As NRI fee is very high so I wanted her to do 11 and 12 from India.
Greetings from ALLEN Overseas!
Generally, to fall under the NRI category, your daughter needs at least four years of the academic year outside India, including the 10th and 12th. So, as per your query, if your daughter has done her 11th and 12th standard in India, she will not be counted as an NRI candidate. She will fall under the general category like any other Indian student.
If a student studied till 11th grade in USA and done 12th in CBSE India from Maharashtra, can they be considered for state quota of Maharashtra or they will be treated NRI ?
Thank you for writing to us!
It all depends on your documentation proving his/her Nationality.

Hi, I am an OCI card holder (Born in USA and did my entire schooling in India). I have attempted NEET and also got my NEET score. I wish to take admission in AFMC (Armed Forces Medical College), Pune. It is evident that 115 seats are allotted for boys, 30 for girls and 5 seats for foreign nationals. As an OCI card holder, will I be considered as a foreign national or will I come under the boys category for admission in AFMC Pune?
Greetings from ALLEN Overseas!
As per the decision dated February 03, 2023 passed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in Writ Petition (Civil) 891 / 2021, the OCI/PIO candidates who have secured OCI/PIO card before 04.03.2021 shall be considered as Indian nationals. Therefore, the foreign national candidates will be those who are NOT citizens of India (by birth or naturalized) (but not Overseas Citizens of India / Persons of Indian Origin (OCI/PIO) candidates who have secured OCI/PIO card on or after 04.03.2021) shall be considered as FOREIGN NATIONALS.
So, please check your documents and proceed accordingly for the admission process in AFMC.
Thank You!
Hello ,
My kid is a US citizen and has been studying in Indian since his Grade 4.
He has OCI card and has Aadhar card.
Since he has been studying in India for last 8 years and will be finishing 9 years of studies in India by the time he finishes 12th Grade. So will be he be considered as an NRI category or will be considered in General category. Can you please help with this query .
Greetings from ALLEN Overseas!
As you mentioned, your child has an Aadhar Card, so he can apply under the general category. He can utilize NRI sponsorship only when you or his relative works or resides in the USA. However, utilizing NRI sponsorship will be subject to the rules and regulations finalized by the MCC and other conducting bodies. US Nationals must qualify for the NEET cutoff marks to be eligible for NRI quota admissions. The institute-wise cutoff varies every year.

Hi,
Me and my wife live in US and our twin daughters are born in US. Our daughters are currently in 7th grade.
We have Indian passport while our daughters are US citizen and they have OCI card.
If we need to relocate to India due to project related work then our daughters will study from 8th grade to 12th grade in India.
In this scenario will they be eligible to appear in NEET UG and NEET PG as general category students or they will be NRI students?
Reason I am asking is there are very less medical seats for NRI students and they are very costly.
How about other courses like engineering, architecture, CA, CS, etc.?
Thanks.
Greetings from ALLEN Overseas!
Based on the current criteria, your daughters are eligible to apply for NEET UG under the general category. However, it is advisable to stay updated with the latest trends in the NEET exam.
There are different exams with varying eligibility criteria for other courses such as engineering, architecture, etc. Please familiarize yourself with the specific eligibility requirements for these courses.
Each course has its unique benefits, and ultimately, the choice between engineering, medicine, or any other profession should be based on your daughter’s preferences and interests.
Thank You. We hope this will help you. Feel free to reach out to us if you need any other help!

Hi Sir/Madam, my child is studying in Singapore. He is studying Cambridge Igcse syllabus. Please advise, whether he is eligible for general quota.
Thank you for writing to us!
It all depends on your documentation proving his/her Nationality.
I am foreign national can I get seat through all India quota? …will my fee be equal to same as general category student?
Thank you for writing to us!
NRIs’ eligibility to participate in AIQ counselling for General seats will be subject to the rules and regulations finalised by the NMC only.
My child is studying in class 12 with PCMB in CBSE Board in Middle East. She was born in India and has domicile of certificate of MP. If she secures good marks in NEET 2025 she can get admission in state quota seat as general candidate or she has to compulsorily take admission in NRI quota only. Quota ishould be an advantage to NRIs not compulsion.
