In response to the constant demand made by students for relaxing the JEE Advanced examination eligibility criteria, India’s Ministry of Education revised the JEE Main 2023 & JEE Advanced 2023 eligibility criteria on 10 January 2023, Tuesday. The MoE has decided that in addition to the candidates scoring 75% and above in aggregate in the Class XII board exams, the top 20 percentile students of each education board will also be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced and seek admission in IITs and NITs even if they haven’t scored the prescribed 75% aggregate marks in class XII exams.
As per the old criteria, students must obtain a minimum of 75% in the class XII board exams in order to qualify and apply for JEE Advanced. Hence, those applicants who fall short of the 75% aggregate in their class XII boards will benefit from the revised 20 percentile criteria. According to a senior ministry official, “Discussions were held, and since many of the top 20 percentile candidates in several state boards score below 75 per cent marks or 350 marks, the ministry decided that if a candidate is in the top 20 percentile, he or she is eligible.”
Meanwhile, The Bombay High Court has declined to defer the JEE Main 2023 Session 1 examination that is slated for later this month. A division bench of Chief Justice S V Gangapurwala and Justice Sandeep Marne concluded that postponing the pan-India exam in response to a Public Interest Litigation would not be suitable because it would affect thousands of IIT aspirants.
A PIL was filed at the Bombay High Court by activist Anubha Srivastava Sahai to defer the JEE Main exam dates till April 2023 and to remove the 75% marks criteria. While the HC on Tuesday declined to postpone the exam, it has decided to consider the 75% criteria on 21 February 2023.
Following that, the Union Education Minister intervened and, in a meeting, decided to include the 20 percentile criteria as well.
The JEE Main 2023 Session 1 (January) online registration will close on January 12th. The National Testing Agency (NTA) released the JEE Main 2023 exam dates for January and April sessions on 15 December 2022.
The dates for the January exams are 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31 January 2023.
According to the JEE Main 2023 information bulletin, eligibility for admission to B.E./ B.Tech/ B.Arch/ B.Planning programmes at NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs through the central seat allocation board will be based on All-India Rank with the additional eligibility of at least 75% in aggregate in the Class XII examination conducted by the respective education Boards. For the SC/ ST Candidates, the qualifying aggregate is 65% in the Class XII Board exams.
